Trump Defends Tariffs Amid Market Turmoil: ‘Sometimes You Have to Take Medicine’

As U.S. markets brace for another steep drop, President Donald Trump on Sunday night stood by his sweeping tariffs that have unnerved investors, saying, “Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.”

His comments came as futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged nearly 1,000 points Sunday evening, signaling more turbulence on Wall Street when markets reopen Monday.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on his return from a long weekend at Mar-a-Lago, Trump acknowledged the market uncertainty but expressed confidence in the nation's resilience. “What’s going to happen with the market? I can’t tell you,” he said. “But I can tell you, our country has gotten a lot stronger, and eventually, it’ll be a country like no other.”

Since Trump’s surprise announcement last Wednesday of higher-than-expected tariffs on all imports, the stock market has experienced its sharpest decline since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Dow has dropped 9.2%, the S&P 500 is down 10.5%, and the Nasdaq has fallen 11.4%.
